As a leader in modern software development platforms, tools, and methodologies, Pivotal was uniquely positioned to look critically at how effective development teams work. After conducting an in-depth research initiative that involved surveying over 1,600 technology leaders across five countries and six industries, Pivotal approached Type/Code to design and build a platform that visualizes the insights revealed through this research, and create an evaluation tool that allows anyone to analyze their own team’s technology approach in relation to their industry’s norms.
Revealing Key Insights
To bring the first visualizations to life, we carefully analyzed a massive pool of raw data. After carefully reviewing the visualizations for clarity and functionality, we landed on a handful of iterative templates that accommodated the largest possible set of data point, and effectively communicated key takeaways at a glance. The resulting Pivotal Benchmark web platform is arranged into 4 sections (Key Findings, Rankings, Explore the Data and Methodology). For more specifically scoped insights, the data can be filtered by industry.
Powerful data exploration
To support this sophisticated frontend platform, a custom CMS solution was built out to manage all current and anticipated content created by Pivotal each year. Parsing spreadsheets with a set of scripts and backend settings, we were able to transform the typically long and dull process of data entry into an easy and effortless experience.
Creating a Participatory Experience
A key component of the Pivotal Benchmark experience was a 5-minute questionnaire tool — a quantitative framework that assesses an organization’s software development practices relative to other industries and countries, to examine how they compare. Upon completing the questionnaire, participants are rewarded with a data-driven results page, comparing their performance against industry standards, and further breaking down areas of improvement into 3 actionable categories. The UI of the entire experience was designed to generate dynamically, resulting in an output summary and analysis that is completely responsive.
